In 2022, the No. 1 school on Cryptosupdates launched the first blockchain degree program in one of the world’s main financial cities.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, which launched the city’s first blockchain degree programme four years ago, will be the best university for blockchain in 2022. Faculty and instructors teaching blockchain and related subjects are members or leaders of some of the world’s most significant professional and industry organizations, and they bring their knowledge to the classroom and research projects.

According to Associate Professor Xiapu Luo of the department of computing, the HKPolyU Research Centre for Blockchain Technology is the first research centre in Hong Kong whose research covers full-stack blockchain techniques and distinguishes itself through cross-disciplinary blockchain research with key members from computer science, finance, logistics and maritime studies, and industrial and systems engineering.
HK PolyU is home to the city’s first master of science degree in blockchain technology, which began in 2022. It also offers a three-year PhD program in fintech that combines computer science, business, and supply-chain courses, and is one of just four institutions in our 2022 rankings that offers a bachelor of science (honours) in financial technology and artificial intelligence. The latter’s interdisciplinary curriculum includes software engineering, system security, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptocurrencies, crowdfunding, e-finance, big data, and other topics.
Distributed Ledger Technology, Cryptocurrency and E-Payment, and Blockchain and Smart Contract Security are among the 22 blockchain and related courses available.
Best Blockchain Universities in 2022: Cryptosupdates’ Methodology
Scholars from HKPolyU have produced 209 blockchain research articles, the most of any school we evaluated for this project, and have gotten more citations as a result. Only King Saud University placed No. 48 in our ranking, which comes close to HKPolyU’s 4,202 citations.
Outside of the classroom, HKPolyU faculty are well-known in the region for setting the agenda for enterprise blockchain technology. Jiannong Cao, an HKPolyU professor, served as general chair of the 16th ACM ASIA Conference on Computer and Communications Security in 2021, which featured a number of presentations on blockchain and distributed computing. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is the largest educational and scientific computing society in the world. Luo was the program chair for the International Conference on Blockchain and Trustworthy Systems, often known as BlockSys2021.
Except for employment and industry effects, HKPolyU ranked highly in the Cryptosupdates poll. That is a graduate’s employability. In that regard, HKPolyU is in the bottom 25% of the 50 schools. Given China’s tight crypto ban, several in the crypto world are sceptical that any Chinese university graduates will have good job prospects.

HK PolyU was established in 1937 as the city’s first post-secondary technical university, initially offering studies in marine wireless operation, mechanical engineering, and building construction to support Hong Kong’s marine and construction industries.
The university’s goal changed in the 1960s to provide industry-focused education for professional workers, combining real-world technical skills with academic theory—the cornerstone of the school’s blockchain programs. As an extension of that mandate, HKPolyU provides an executive certificate in blockchain applications in financial technology through its school of continuing studies. Paul Li, president of the Hong Kong Internet Finance Association and a senior manager at Alibaba, teaches the program.
